time between pre existing disease related surgery and health insurance application.
Can a person apply for health insurance any time after a surgery for PED? Or there is an advised time duration for which one should wait before applying for any health insurance policy.
If a policy is rejected for above reason, can you apply for the same policy again?
IS there a chance that you will be rejected by different policy for the reason mentioned above?
1. When can one apply for health insurance after surgery for a PED?
- You can apply for health insurance at any time post-surgery, but it’s recommended to wait until your health stabilizes and you have medical records showing recovery.
- Insurers will likely assess the surgery, current health condition, and ongoing treatments during underwriting. A typical waiting period of 6–12 months post-surgery is often advised to ensure better chances of acceptance.
2. If a policy is rejected for this reason, can you reapply for the same policy?
- Yes, you can reapply. However, it’s important to address the reason for rejection by providing additional medical reports or waiting until the insurer's advised time period has passed. Some insurers might consider you again after their minimum cooling-off period, typically 6 months to a year.
3. Can other policies reject your application for the same reason?
- Yes, there is a chance. Health insurance applications are subject to medical underwriting, and if multiple insurers perceive the risk as too high, they may reject the application.
- However, every insurer has its own underwriting criteria. Some may offer coverage with higher premiums, co-payments, or specific exclusions for the PED.
Suggestions:
- Look for insurers offering customized plans for individuals with PEDs.
- Explore group health insurance policies, which often have relaxed medical underwriting.
- Work with an experienced advisor to choose policies with flexible underwriting or sub-limits for PEDs.

Hi Priyanka,
Yes there is a cooling off period after any surgery. It varies from few weeks to few years depending on the reason and type of surgery. For ex a cholecystectomy or gall bladder removal will have shorter cooling off period than say a Angioplasty or arterial stent surgery.
You need to discuss with your advisor in detail about all minor/major PED details (even symptoms).
I recommend you connect with India's top advisors at beshak to discuss these options in more details.
